The purpose of the Reginald S. Fleet International Scholarship is to provide international educational experiences for President's Scholars. Fifty-two PSs traveled overseas during the 2007-08 school year on the Fleet Scholarship. We expect to have about 80 do so in 2008-09, with awards averaging over $3,000. Recipients are selected on a competitive basis. Need is considered as a factor in determining the amount of the award.

The Fleet Scholarship Program, which includes the scholarship fund, was established by Julia Fleet, the daughter of Reginald S. Fleet, a mechanical engineering major from the Class of 1916. Mr. Fleet was one of the seven founders of a company whose sole product for over 40 years was WD-40.

Why spend a semester in another country?

Kinsey Wade - Oxford Study Abroad Program

“As far back as I can possibly remember, my mother has always told me stories of foreign and exciting places, such as Russia, Italy, and France. Stemming from a strong background and education in History, she would often regale me with stories of wars, mysteries, and wonders. I knew that one day I would be able to visit these places, and I am thrilled to know that that day has finally come.”

Kathryn Shoemaker - Oxford Study Abroad Program

“No college experience today is complete without a study abroad trip. When in your life else can you absorb more without restriction than in college? For me Oxford will be a beautiful medley of opportunity and learning. …On this trip I want to find a new passion, discover a new hideaway, plan trips and chart courses, find my past and see my present with unhindered eyes, and make and solidify friendships that will last for a lifetime.”

Traci Quercia - Oxford Study Abroad Program

"This program offers students the opportunity to spend five weeks traveling throughout Europe, absorbing and studying different cultures and visiting numerous historical sites. This unique experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see not only international landmarks, but also the countryside, villages and people of diverse cultures.”

Lilly Duncan - Oxford Study Abroad Program

“How can one imagine what being immersed in the artwork of European masters, walking among the pillars of ancient architecture, and living the mysteries of past cultures and cities will teach?”

Molly Lipscomb - Oxford Study Abroad Program

“Want to hear about the best time of my life? Well, I’ll tell you all about it when I return from Europe this summer!"

Vishal Arya - Hong Kong/Singapore Summer Program

“I want to study abroad so I can meet a princess in a faraway land who teaches me the meaning of life. I want to study abroad so I can see something, whether grand or terrifying that remains an indelible image in my mind, altering what fate holds in store for me. I want to study abroad because there is a man at a café across the world contemplating his next book, talking to strangers, trying to discern something about their life worthy of being a part of time. I want to study abroad so I can hear a pristine playing of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony. I want to study abroad so I can canvass a part of the country’s industry and depart with a significant comparison between my country and the visited nation. I want to study abroad because novel ideas exist that have yet to be incorporated into American society. I’m a dreamer; I want to find those ideas.”

Lisa Hofler - LBAT

“European history has always fascinated me, so the chance to visit many culture- and history-rich areas will be wonderful. I am already planning each weekend’s destination, from Berlin and Switzerland to Spain and Italy.”
